Sakkou Kanzashi, redux.

I'm not going to post a picture of it again 'cause I don't want to bore you to death, but I have a request.

For those of you who may be familiar, this is my sakkou kanzashi. I got it back at the end of 2009 during one of my last trips to Kyoto. At the time, two maiko (that I am aware of) had worn it/were wearing it during their sakkou period. After that this kanzashi seemed to disappear and I figured it the design had just run its natural course and had been replaced by new designs, never to be seen again.

And then...out of the blue...it popped up again this month!

I would love it if you folks could help me compile a list of the maiko who have worn this kanzashi design for sakkou. So far, the ones I know of are:

Mamechiho (November 2009)
Tsuruha (January 2012)
Kikuyu (December 2009)  (click the picture to get a bigger, clearer view)
Fukusuzu (May 2012)

Maiko who may have worn it (I'm looking for good confirmation photos):
Toshihana (when was her erikae? I found a picture posted in 2007 but it may be older)
Ayakazu (May 2010)
Takasuzu

There must have been more. The day I went to the shop and bought mine there was at least one other one on display, plus the one or two I knew of in use at the time, and obviously Tsuruha was able to get one three years later.

Any help is appreciated!

Oh, here is a better shot of Kikuyu:

And not sure, but it looks like Yasuha from Miyagawa-cho might have worn it:

    1. I love the picture of Kikuyu. Too bad Momoyama-san has it set to friends only (but fortunately for me I'm one of those friends, mwahahaha!)

Yasuha's looks suspiciously like it as well. It's either that or one of the similar designs I have seen floating around, where one crane (often silver but I'm sure I've seen gold too) is attached to the pine. Maybe we need a Sakkou Kanzashi Database...

  2. Hi Ayame-san,

I came across your blog while looking at kanzashi. I will be heading for Kyoto this April (second time! I am a Kyoto girl, too) and wonder where I can buy a kanzashi like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GOLD-MAKIE-TOETOISESHELL-KANZASHI-MEIJI-/300436399215

The first time I went, I didn't really pay attention to them as I was busy going around the various temples. Now that I will get to spend an entire day in Gion, I want to know where I can get something similar?

    Thank you!

    1. I don't know if you'll be able to get that exact one, but combs like that can be found in lots of places. Jyuusanya usually has a nice selection. You could probably also find them at Kintakedo, Kazurasei, or Ikuokaya. I could swear I've seen them in department stores (like Daimaru). All of those places are at various points on Shijo-dori. Jyuusanya and Daimaru aren't in Gion though, they're on the other side of the river. If you go to Teramachi-dori, there's another shopping street right next to it, and there's a shop on the right side of that street close to where it intersects with Shijo-dori that sells lots of traditional Japanese stuff, including some kanzashi. They would probably have that kind of comb too. Sometimes places that sell kimono will also sell some kanzashi, and might include that kind. Up along Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka, on the way to Kiyomizu-dera, there are tons of little shops that sell all kinds of things. I don't know any of their names, but you could probably find some there to.

      Good luck!

    2. I just bought a sakkou kanzashi from YJA! It looks like yours, but instead of green pine, it has a silver background. You can see it here: :)

    4. Nice! Please let me know if you find them again!

By the way, I have another sakkou sighting of your kanzashi...Fukusuzu of Miyagawacho!

She just became a geiko today, after only wearing Sakkkou for 4 days, so this one was a quick spotting! She has some of the most beautiful sakkou pictures I have ever seen.
